Preparation
Nothing
worthwhile is easy.
Each performer should rehearse their part without accompaniment.
Drummers and solo artists should get a metronome to keep their
speed constant. Learn to practice with headphones on. The
day before you get into the studio, immerse yourself in your
music. Limit exposure to any other kinds of music in this
period.
An
underlying concept in your song leaves a road map when the
going gets tough. A good song answers the questions who, what
where, why, when and how. It should paint a picture for the
listener. Have a simple answer when people ask what kind of
music you play and what you are about. Keep a mailing list!
Do
your homework. Organize your time before you get to the studio.
Vocalists should write out all the lyrics to all the songs.
The more time spent preparing before the studio the happier
the artist.
